The Vase

Sitting at the entrance of my home, it represents a milestone page in my life. I had no idea joining the NCSSM Online Program would be so life changing. Going in, I knew I would have an opportunity to meet people from across North Carolina and take more advanced classes in Math and Sciences, I had no idea I would spend three weeks in Morganton (North Carolina) playing with dirt and mixing minerals to create our own color glazes.

I spent so many hours shaping and decorating this vase; it felt like a creative rollercoaster.  Now, every time I see it, I'm reminded of the life-long friendships I made, what I learned, and how I challenged myself through this 14-inch-tall project.

The Start: design sketches

Then....small scale prototypes

Me building the vase...long process, many hours...

Final shape, l let it dry a bit before I painted it white and then carved my design.

Before the first firing.

The final colors I chose to add were copper and cobalt oxide.

The final piece
